Here at Dartmoor Brewery we like to keep things local. In 2013, we commissioned local Dartmoor farmer, Tim Cox, to grow barley for our Dartmoor IPA beer – the first successful partnership of its kind on the moor.
Tim's barley crop is still serving us well and with the milder spring weather of showers and sunshine, this year's yield is already doing superbly well. Were now hoping for plenty of good summer weather to ripen the grain!
Tim is a very successful Dartmoor cereal farmer who has been growing wheat for Hovis and is now producing the majority of our malting barley. He farms over 150 acres of cereals, which are sown in spring to be harvested at the end of August or early September depending on the weather. Tim's farmland lies on the North Eastern slopes of Dartmoor around Drewsteignton and ranges between 700ft and 900ft above sea level – amongst the highest in the country for growing cereals!
As our partnership with Tim has been so fruitful, Tim is looking to increase the amount of barley he grows for our beers to produce the top quality Marris Otter barley variety as a winter option.
