If you’re an Exeter Chiefs fan, you probably already know the Blue Ball Inn – the closest pub to the Chiefs’ Sandy Park ground on the outskirts of Exeter.
But whether you’re a rugby fan or not, the Blue Ball is certainly worth a visit, and they serve an excellent pint of Jail Ale!
This fine thatched pub dates back to the turn of the 17th Century. The very convivial and cosy bar is warmed by a real log-burning fire in the cooler months, really adding to the pub’s welcoming atmosphere. When the weather’s warmer, you can also enjoy an excellent beer garden.
The restaurant at the Blue Ball is worth discovering. The head chef takes pride in serving up culinary delights using Devon’s finest ingredients, with lunchtime and evening menus which reflect the season. Start with a tasty venison terrine perhaps, then tuck in to one of the main course favourites which include such delights as beer-battered haddock, local farm sausages and succulent steaks. It’s worth leaving room for dessert, with classics including an indulgent sticky toffee pudding.
On Exeter Chiefs match days, the Blue Ball (just a stone’s throw from the ground) is an obvious choice for a little pre or post-match refreshment and sustenance. You’ll find a special rugby menu, and you can even park your car (the closest public parking to the ground on match day) for £10 – with a 10% discount on your restaurant bill. You’ll need to book your meal in advance.
Fancy making a night of it? You'll also find four comfy bedrooms.
Great rugby, great pub, and a great pint of Jail Ale. An altogether perfect combination.
