Rail to Ale - the Dartmoor Line

Posted by Mike C in Nov 2021

It's now even easier to get to Dartmoor and experience one or two of our brilliant local pubs, with the re-opening of rail services linking the city of Exeter with Dartmoor National Park.

Newly named the Dartmoor Line, the new rail link offers up to 8 services a day from both Exeter St Davids and Exeter Central stations, and the town of Crediton, to the town of Okehampton on the Northern fringe of Dartmoor.

Okehampton station is very well placed for a Dartmoor day out.  For something fairly leisurely, take a stroll down the hill from the station to explore the historic town itself. Okehampton's roots lie in the wool trade, and both the Museum of Dartmoor Life and Okehampton Castle are well worth a visit.  For a little refreshment, in the form of our famous Jail Ale or the equally enjoyable Legend, we can heartily recommend the Fountain Inn which can be found in the main street. You'll also find a good restaurant and comfortable rooms at The Fountain.

For something rather more challenging, put on your walking boots and tackle the 7 mile round-trip hike from Okehampton Station to the excellent Tors Inn in Belstone, for a well-deserved Jail Ale and something hearty to eat. Remember to check the weather conditions for your walk before you set out, and it's best to wear plenty of layers as the weather can and does change without warning!

If two wheels are your thing, you'll probably already know that Okehampton Station is the start of the Granite Way - an 11 mile, mainly off-road cycle route linking Okehampton and Lydford, via the spectacular Meldon Viaduct (which once carried the railway line from Okehampton via Lydford to Tavistock). Bring your bike on the train, or check out one of the local bike hire outlets. Whilst the Granite Way is mainly level, you'll still build up a thirst, and you'll find the beautiful, thatched Bearslake Inn perfectly placed just off the Granite Way, 6 miles from Okehampton.
