We're proud and honoured to be sponsoring the legendary Dartmoor Discovery (DD) ultramarathon, which goes back to its roots this year with a special 20th anniversary route celebrating the race’s original 34-mile course.
The 2018 Dartmoor Discovery (affectionately known as the DD) starts and finishes in Princetown, home of Dartmoor Brewery, on 2nd June, celebrating the early years of the race, before the route was changed to avoid a busy road.
Race Director Roger Hayes said: ‘The DD attracts some of toughest athletes in the ultramarathon discipline. The 2018 course will offer these athletes the opportunity to truly test themselves against the event’s classic, turn-of-the-century winners, who were running a 34-mile course. It’s a unique opportunity to turn back time and I can’t wait to see the results!’
The 32-mile version of the DD has the distinction of being the UK's longest single-lap road race, with the added challenge provided by the demanding gradients of Dartmoor. Such is the popularity of this gruelling challenge, that all 250 places were taken up within a week of becoming available.
Roger Hayes, who is also Chairman of the event's organisers the Teignbridge Trotters, said: "Apart from dozens of our members helping with marshalling the race, we’ve also got a record number of them who have entered it as well. It would be great if our men’s team could defend their winning team prize and even better if our ladies could feature in the ladies team prizes".
As if the mileage endurance and Dartmoor's stunning but distinctly hilly landscape wasn't enough, the competitors have the added challenge of preparing for the unexpected when it comes to Dartmoor's weather conditions, which can change dramatically in no time. Last year the runners started in warm sunshine and finished in torrential rain with a freezing cold temperature.
The DD attracts some of the country’s top ultra distance runners, as well as hardy enthusiasts of all ages, making it a true test of body and soul.
As the runners battle across Dartmoor, a huge logistical operation ensures all aspects of the event proceed smoothly and safely, thanks to some 150 volunteers looking after everything from marshalling and timekeeping, to water stations and first aid.
In addition to Dartmoor Brewery, other sponsors of this year's DD include the Ilsington Hotel, Sibelco and Road Runners Club.
