You’ll find the Avon Inn in the tiny Devon village of Avonwick, where the rugged scenery of Dartmoor gives way to the soft but stunning landscapes of the South Hams. A traditional country pub, but not too far off the beaten track.
It’s a lovely pub, whatever the time of year. A wood-burning stove for fireside chats in the winter, and a big garden for al-fresco lunching in the summer.
Just behind the pub flows the River Avon, as it makes its journey from the Avon reservoir on Dartmoor, to the South Devon seaside at Bigbury on Sea.
You’ll find our Jail Ale and Dartmoor Legend on the bar, well looked after by expert hosts Mark and Sue.
Food is served from 12 noon right the way through until 9pm. At lunchtimes, solid pub classics are the order of the day – sandwiches, jacket potatoes, a traditional ploughman’s lunch, a house curry, honey roast ham, egg and chips, and plenty more. In the evenings there’s a wider selection – but the emphasis remains very firmly on good hearty fayre, with a tempting steak and ale pie, rib eye steak and, if you’re extra hungry, a plateful of surf & turf – rib eye steak, garlic prawns and chunky chips. The menu is excellent value, with most main courses under the £10 mark.
The Avon Inn is a great choice for an evening out – but we think that a daytime visit is best, so you can combine a stop at this great little pub with a day out in glorious Devon countryside. The historic market town of Totnes is 10 minutes drive away – famous for its castle, independent shopping and an emphasis on the creative arts and alternative lifestyle. For a breath of seaside air, head to the yachty haven of Dartmouth, or the wide sandy beach at Bigbury on Sea.
