We're out and about on the Isle of Wight this week, spreading the Dartmoor Brewery word to the thirsty sailing competitors and spectators at Cowes Week. We thought it only right that the Isle of Wight should be represented in our Pub of the Week slot - and in a break with our tradition we're featuring not just one, but two Pubs of the Week on the island!
Our first stop is the Duke of York in Cowes, where our Jail Ale has been enjoying a prime slot on the Pop-Up Bar throughout Cowes Week. The Duke of York is a Cowes landmark - placed as it is right in the heart of town, and just a couple of minutes from the main High Street and the high-speed Red Jet passenger link to Southampton. Hosts Barry and Sally offer a warm welcome, well-kept beers, an excellent menu, and comfortable rooms in which to stay the night. It's a popular pub with the locals, and with visitors to this fine isle, especially during the busy Cowes Week.
When you're out and about in Cowes and hunger strikes, head for the Duke of York and enjoy a perfectly presented pint of Jail Ale while you peruse the menu. The call of the sea is never far away in Cowes, so it's not surprising to find some good fish options on the menu, plus a tempting array of other hearty pub favourites at very reasonable prices.
And now for something slightly different. Joe's Bar (and post office!) in Niton. You'll find the village of Niton towards the southernmost tip of the Isle of Wight, close to St Catherine's Lighthouse and Blackgang Chine. Joe's Bar really is part Niton Post Office - how very convenient! Pick up a stamp, pop a postcard in the box, and then enjoy a perfect pint of Jail Ale in very convivial surroundings! The bar's Cask Marque award is testimony to its excellent beer-keeping. There's good food on offer, including ever-changing specials and a tempting selection of pizzas from Wednesday to Sunday. Come to think of it, maybe every post office should have a bar. Or vice-versa?
