Pub of the Week: The Whitchurch Inn

The welcoming Whitchurch Inn can be discovered just a stone's throw from Devon's award-winning market town of Tavistock, in a splendid spot on the edge of Dartmoor, next to the ancient village church of St Andrew's.

Always a popular pub with the locals, the "Whitty" has been family owned since 1999 - though the original building dates back to the 13th Century.  The pub has been lovingly restored and transformed in recent times, and is packed with characterful features including mighty oak beams, natural stone walls and two large fireplaces.

Will and the team ensure that there's always a warm welcome, and a fine line-up on the bar including our own Jail Ale, Legend, Dartmoor IPA and Wistman's Cider.

It's a great choice for a hearty Sunday lunch before or after a hike on the moor, and throughout the week you can tuck into a great choice of pub favourites including a classic steak and Jail Ale pie, beer battered haddock and superb steaks from local butcher Howells of Tavistock.

Make a day of it, with a drive across Dartmoor, a stroll across Whitchurch Down, a visit to the fascinating market town of Tavistock, or 18 holes at the nearby Tavistock Golf Club.
